ISPS participated at Capacity Building on managing Constitutional Processes in South Sudan
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in partnership with the Constitutional Review Commission have concluded a training Capacity building workshop on constitutional making processes.
The two days’ workshop which started on the 5th and ended on 6th of December 2024 was attended by the Nicholas Haysom, the Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan, the Chair of National Constitutional Review Commission, Hon. Dr. Riang Yer Zuor, representatives of Civil Society Organizations, Academia, Think Tanks, MPs from both the National Legislative Assembly and Council of States, Media Houses, Members of Judiciary of South Sudan, independent Advocates, UN Agencies and other Stakeholders.
The participants deliberated on number of important issues. Some of which were:
- What type of constitution should South Sudan adopted?Â
- Does South Sudan need a Federal Constitution? If yes, which one?
- Should South Sudan go for elections before of after adopted a new constitution?
- Should the country opted for a term limited for president Office, Vice President, Governor of States and Administrative Areas?
- How inclusive should South Sudan constitution look like?
- What best practices can South Sudan borrow from?
- Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethopia were some of examples discussed.
